Detail of 'Clearance', Nien Schwartz, 1997-2001. Dimensions variable. Installation comprising 600 bags (quantity variable)
In the face of increasing land and water degradation is it possible to create an ecologically sustainable future? What is sustainable to begin with?
Created from hundreds of emergency edition topographic maps of Australia distributed during the 1940s, the four works in 'Promised Land' considers the collective impact of global daily consumption on the environment with wit, subtlety and beauty.
'Clearance', a central work, consists of a large installation of rows of shopping bags, created from 600 emergency edition maps interspersed with mirrored sections and text. The artist draws the viewer into a dialogue which provokes discussion and consideration of the issues of ecology, sustainability, consumerism and art.
Special Exhibition Events such as free and subsidised bus travel to the exhibition for schools will ensure regional school audiences have an opportunity to access the exhibition during school hours.
An extensive Education Package designed especially for use in Primary and Secondary schools and a 24-page colour catalogue accompanies 'Promised Land'.
