Detail of: Hans Arkeveld, 'Of Two Minds', 1985.
Hans has been a practising artist since the early 1960s and has taught in most of the major art institutions in Perth. His art, and that of a handful of others, has been recognised as seminal to the development of a particularly Western Australian narrative aesthetic, especially in the field of sculpture. This aesthetic has developed from many influences, in particular the art of Papua/New Guinea which he experienced first hand during his early travels through that country.
Over the past forty years Hans has held a special position as resident artist in the School of Anatomy and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia. This has enabled him to refine the art of anatomical drawing while pondering the nature of life, its conception, and the development of human consciousness. Through his unique knowledge of the human form and his highly developed skills as a craftsman, Hans has the ability to create artworks of exquisite refinement.
He also has a well-developed sense of fun and whimsy. He is fascinated with the flotsam of modern life (he calls his 'patron saint' St Sulo), and often delights in turning a humble object into both a humorous jest and a poetic statement.
